Pain Of Githunguri Woman Whose Husband Perished In Road Accident

A family in Guthungi area, Kiambu County has accused police of not assisting them pf getting justice for their kin who was kill in a road accident in June, 2023.

The family says the suspect who was driving the vehicle that night is known and had been arrested in connection with hit-and-run case but he was released under unclear circumstances despite a witness’s recording statements at Githunguri police station.

Benson Kageche, 38 was knocked down and killed on June 16, 2023 around 11pm at night while he was crossing the road to join his family for a night as usual.

The father of 3 children has alighted at Githiga market and was strolling home when he was reportedly knocked down by private vehicle which was later identified.

The deceased wife Allen Wanjiru shared her story with one of the dailies hoping that wheels of justice Will start moving ten months since the husband was killed.

She narrated l, “I was waiting for my husband to come back home from work but around 11pm, one of his brothers knocked on our door and reported that Kageche had been involved in an accident,”

At that time, a crowd had formed around Kageche’s body after he was knocked down and left fighting for his life.

had to wait until 1am for a police vehicle from Githunguri Police Station to pick the body.

She added, “We proceeded to Mokoe Funeral Home where his body was kept as we started the next phase of preparing for burial,” she said.

The matter was booked at Githunguri Police Station under OB 7/17/6/2023 and Kageche was laid to rest on June 22, 2023.

About two months after the burial, a neighbour approached the family and confessed to having witnessed the accident on the fateful night.

The witnes claimed the person who was driving the vehicle that killed Kageche lives in the same village.

The witness was then accompanied to Githunguri police station where he recorded the statement and the suspect was arrested that day.

A day later, on visiting the station, they were informed that the suspect had been released on bond and the vehicle was awaiting inspection.

After several follow-ups, Wanjiru claims the officers started taking them in circles until they realised that the vehicle had been released in unclear circumstances.

“After about a month of follow-up and asking that we be provided with an abstract, one of the officers became hostile to us,” said Wanjiru.

The family is now appealing to Inspector General Japeth Koome to intervene and ensure that justice is served.
