Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has outlined how to deal with rogue traffic police officers who receive bribes on Kenyan roads.

In an undated video that has gone viral, Kanja who appeared concerned told police officers that they should serve with dignity.

This comes amid several complaints that some officers have been collecting millions of shillings from motorists thus tainting the image of the National Police Service.

“What we are going to do from now once we find any traffic officer receiving bribes is to do away with that traffic base where he is attached,” furious Kanja stated

He added, “so that it becomes the responsibility of the Base Commander to see that if his officers are corrupt, he recalls them back,”

Basically, Base Commanders in police stations are in charge of traffic police officers and assign them duties and routes to manage on a daily basis.

“If a Base Commander is still entertaining such habits, the we will punish you, we will uproot your base, because we want these officers to carry out dignified service,” said Kanja

“We cannot carry out dignified service, when Kenyans are calling men even on Sundays telling me how traffic police officers are collecting bribes, that is too unfair, it is not right,”

Kanja said it is embarrassing that some of the officers collecting bribes have served in the National Police Service for many years.
