Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has suspended four students after a violent altercation in a lecture hall was captured on video and went viral on social media.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, during an afternoon lecture in MEA 001 Lecture Hall.

In the widely circulated clip, two students are seen physically assaulting two fellow students in front of a full class while the lecturer stood nearby holding a paper, apparently unable to intervene.

The attackers accused the victims of disrupting the ongoing class. The victims appeared defenseless as they were beaten before being dragged out of the hall.

Order was eventually restored, and the injured students received first aid.The university acted swiftly.

On Friday, 27 March 2026, MMUST Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo issued an official statement confirming that the institution had identified all parties involved.

“Following a report regarding the assault incident at MEA 001 Lecture Hall on the afternoon of Wednesday, 25th March, 2026, the University has taken the following steps,” the memo read.

Prof. Shibairo stated that statements were collected from the assaulted students, the assailants, the lecturer present, and the class representative.

The students involved were arrested and taken to the security office before disciplinary action was enforced under the MMUST Students’ Regulations Handbook. As a result, four students have been suspended.

The university strongly condemned the act, describing it as “violence and hooliganism” that goes against the values of higher learning.

“As an institution of Higher learning, we strongly condemn such acts of violence and hooliganism.

We call upon all students to remain calm and maintain the spirit of comradeship, observing the rules and regulations that the university has put in place to ensure their safety,” Prof. Shibairo said.

The video sparked widespread public outrage online, with many Kenyans questioning the lecturer’s failure to stop the fight and calling for stronger measures to ensure student safety on campus.
