A young barber’s decision to challenge old styles of shaving and blend it with arty styles has cut him a place in the hair care industry.
Ali Mohammed, 29 alias Barber Lee is now a celebrated barber in the industry. In 2016 he scooped Barber of the Year award in Afro Hair Awards and also awarded Baton of the Barber by Philips.
Having developed interest in hair matters at age of eight Mohammed even without formal training in hair matters he has made a name for himself.
He was employed as a barber before he started a business that made a major swing four years ago after he decided to try new shaving artistic images and names.
“My father, a barber taught me to shave and when I completed high school I ventured into it but I decided to something new” says the Mombasa-based barber.
He is the brain behind the famous hair shave designs like Diamond Platinum design and others like Bob Marley, Batman, 2-Pac, Snoop Doggy and Rick Ross designs among others.
His customers include Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Kenyan artist Shirko, members of Yamoto music band of Tanzania and Tanzania’s musician Berry Black.
“It was just a trial but people liked it and in weeks’ time customers flocked my shop to have the new styles. Even my fellow barbers, some who have been in industry for decades came to learn” he says.
At Barber Lee’s shop it costs Sh1, 500 for a design shave and Sh500 for normal design while children are charged Sh350.
Mohammed with his tree employees says on average they get about 20 customers for design shaves. And on average the business is worth over Sh500, 000 rakes in between Sh70, 000 and Sh100, 000 every month.
“Satisfied customers market our services that we get customers from Nairobi and across borders. Even now competition has creeped in we are still at top of the game by perfecting what we do and trying new designs now and then” says he.
It takes between 30 and 40 minutes to work on a design even when such is new to them
